The design theorist and design historian died on 19 December 2013 in Berlin following a lengthy and serious illness. He was laid to rest on 10 January 2014 in the cemetery of the Georgen Parochial Parish in Prenzlauer Berg. Heinz Hirdina, who was, among other things, chief editor of the design magazine form+zweck from 1973 until 1979, was Professor for the Theory and History of Design at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee from 1993 until 2005. His students included Hannah Bauhoff, Florian Schmidt and Norman Kietzmann. His seminars were always fully subscribed within only hours, despite the fact that he always demanded the highest performance from his students, as well as a committed attitude towards design and its social impact. His work “Gestalten für die Serie. Design in der DDR 1949-1985” (Serial Design. Design in the GDR 1949-1985), was the most important study of the history of industrial design in the GDR, and is now out of print. He will be greatly missed – not only by us.
